 OMED NOTES Meeting

OMED recently held a NOTES meeting on February 22, 2009 at the Aisian Institute of Gastroenterology's (AIG) annual International Workshop on Advanced GI Endoscopy in Hyderabad, India. With the support of major sponsor, Karl Storz, who provided the equipment for the live demonstrations, the meeting was organized by Dr Nageshwar Reddy, Professor Guido Costamagna and Dr Anthony Kalloo who also facilitated the program and demos. Not only was the meeting well attended with very positive feedback from participants, the hospitality shown by Dr Reddy and his team at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology during the entire two day workshop contributed to making it a truly special event.

Sedation Meeting: September 18-19, 2009 - Athens, Greece

The World Organization of Digestive Endoscopy (OMED) the Hellenic Society of Gastroenterology (HSG) and the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) are cooperating to produce an international position statement on the place of sedation in endoscopy an area which is rapidly changing and controversial. The aim of this symposium is to review current practice on the use of sedation for gastrointestinal endoscopy around the world and elaborate guidelines on this topic, based on current published evidence, for the safety of the patients.

Ten of the most prestigious worldwide surgical and medical organizations (including OMED) deeply involved in the specialty of endoscopy will host a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Endoscopy. They will commemorate the beginning of endoscopy as a separate specialty of medicine for this International Congress of Endoscopy.  The meeting will be held in Los Angeles, California from September 9-15, 2011.   The organizing core societies are:

 NYSGE Syllabus

The New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy is the largest regional GI endoscopy society in the United States. The Society is dedicated to the teaching and advancement of gastrointestinal endoscopy. The society runs numerous programs throughout the year, including an annual fellow's endoscopy course each summer, and a major postgraduate endoscopy conference each fall. The next course will be held in New York from December 16-19, 2009.

Each month a syllabus entry from the 32nd Annual New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Course can be accessed here. This week the entry is entitled 'New Frontiers in Small Bowel Endoscopy' by Lauren B. Gerson MD, MSc, Director of the Esophageal and Small Bowel Disorders Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

 OMED Showcase: Centers of Excellence

This month OMED highlights the Santiago Training Center at the Clinica Alemana in Santiago, Chile. The SantiagoTraining Center for advanced endoscopic techniques was founded in Santiago, Chile in 1997 and endorsed by WGO / OMED on July 23, 2004. The mission of the training center is to increase the advanced endoscopy skills of endoscopists from different countries, especially from the Latin-American area; to teach the necessary techniques to become experts in endoscopic sedation ; to encourage trainees to increase their academic knowledge.

The faculty is comprised of 10 medical and surgical endoscopists and 4 anesthesiologists. The endoscopy section is chaired by Dr Claudio Navarrete and Dr Roque Sáenz. The anesthesiology section is chaired by Dr Carlos Reyes.

Areas of training include: Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy, Endoscopy Sedation, and Endoscopic Ultrasound. Other training opportunities include courses on Advanced Endoscopic Training (4 months) and an anesthesiologist's training program (30 days).

How would you initially manage the patient?
