Paris Endoscopy Classification

The Paris endoscopic classification of superficial neoplastic lesions: esophagus, stomach and colon

Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Volume 58, No 6 (Suppl.), 2003

An international group of endoscopists, surgeons, and pathologists gathered in Paris for an intensive workshop designed to explore the utility and clinical relevance of the Japanese endoscopic classification of superficial neoplastic lesions of the GI Tract. This report summarises the conclusions of the workshop and proposes a general framework for the endoscopic classification of superficial lesions of the esophagus, stomach and colon. The clinical relevance of this classification is demonstrated in tables that show the relative proportion of each subtype in the esophagus, stomach and colon, assessing the risk of submucosal invasion and the risk of lymph node metastases.

Paris Workshop on Columnar Metaplasia.

Lambert R, Sharma P. Endoscopy 2005; 37; 879-920

Few entities in gastroenterology are obscured by as much confusion and uncertainty regarding definition, diagnosis, grading etc. than esophageal columnar metaplasia or Barrett’s esophagus for short. Yet this nostalgic entity is of particular importance as a premalignant lesion, especially now that the incidence of adenocarcinoma continues to rise. It was therefore more than timely and encouraging that René Lambert and Prateek Sharma took the initiative of bringing experts together in Paris from all corners of the world.

4th International Conference on Capsule Endoscopy (ICCE 2005)

Summaries from the ICCE 2005 are available on the Endoscopy Journal website for subscribers only. The papers are based on the 4th International Conference on Capsule Endoscopy, a symposium organized and sponsored by Given Imaging, and present the consensus opinion among the authors and not that of an endoscopic society such as ESGE or others. Nevertheless, these papers are meant to provide an interesting overview of the current status of capsule endoscopy and will hopefully serve to stimulate further research.
