Biography - Dr. William S.C. Chao
Dr. William S.C. Chao
Dr. Chao is currently a member of OMED’s Governing Council and President of the Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy (APSDE). He is also President of the Hong Kong Society of Digestive Endoscopy (HKSDE), of which he is a founder.
A veteran gastrointestinal specialist who excels in endoscopy, Dr. Chao is noted for his remarkable effort and achievement in educating future endoscopists and promoting the use of the technology, particularly in China and other medically less privileged countries in Asia. For over 4 decades, he has been travelling extensively to deliver lectures and organise courses. To maximise results from limited resources, he established the “hands-on” training model, under which local doctors with suitable exposure are selected to perform operational procedures under the supervision of expert endoscopists. In China alone, around 30 hands-on teaching workshops have been arranged in different cities since 1990, with over 400 endoscopists benefiting from basic orientation on diagnostic and/or therapeutic endoscopy.
In 2000, Dr. Chao was elected President of the APSDE and became the first Chinese who held this prominent position. He is also an honorary professor of over 25 universities in China and Honorary Consultant of the Chinese Society of Digestive Endoscopy.
